Foundation & Early Years
Scuderia Ferrari was founded in 1929 by Enzo Ferrari as a racing team for Alfa Romeo. Initially, it was not a car manufacturer but a racing stable that prepared and raced Alfa Romeo cars. The iconic prancing horse logo was adopted in 1932, taken from the coat of arms of Francesco Baracca, a World War I flying ace. Ferrari became an independent constructor in 1947 and has been the most successful and iconic team in Formula 1 history.
Team History & Evolution
Ferrari's Formula 1 story began in 1950 at the very first World Championship race in Monaco. The team's early years were marked by both triumph and tragedy, embodying the passionate Italian racing spirit that Enzo Ferrari instilled in his team.
The 1950s and 1960s saw Ferrari establish itself as a major force, with legendary drivers like Alberto Ascari, Juan Manuel Fangio, and Mike Hawthorn bringing championship glory to Maranello. The 1970s brought renewed success with Niki Lauda and Jody Scheckter securing championships, while the 1980s saw technological advancement but limited championship success. However, Ferrari remained the most passionate and followed team in the sport.
The arrival of Michael Schumacher in 1996 marked the beginning of Ferrari's most dominant era. Under the technical leadership of Ross Brawn and Rory Byrne, Ferrari won five consecutive Constructors' Championships from 1999-2004, with Schumacher claiming five Driver titles.
After Schumacher's era, Ferrari faced challenges in returning to championship-winning form despite multiple podiums and race wins. The team has continued to evolve under different leadership, always maintaining its status as Formula 1's most iconic and passionate constructor, with legions of devoted fans worldwide known as the "tifosi."
